Why was ancient Greece divided into different Poleis (city-states)?

Why did the Greeks establish colonies and what was the result of this?

Monarchy

• King/sole ruler
• Heritable

• Koning/alleenheerser
• Erfelijk

Tyranny

• Sole ruler > Tyrant
• Seized power with violence
• Not always bad

• Alleenheerser > Tiran
• Komt met geweld aan de macht
• Niet altijd slecht

Aristocracy

• Nobility at power
• Less attention for the needs of the common people

• Adel aan de macht
• Weinig aandacht voor de belangen van het 'gewone' volk

Oligarchy

• Small group of rich (often old) people at power

• Kleine groep rijke (vaak oude) mannen aan de macht

Democracy

• Demos = people kratos = rule
• You could vote if you had Athenian citizenship
• Except for Metoik (foreigner), women and slaves

• Demos = volk kratos = heersen
• Met Atheens burgerrecht mocht je meebeslissen
• Metoiken (vreemdelingen), vrouwen en slaven niet

• They had a general assembly: ecclesia.
• Everyday governing: small council of 500 people = the boule.
