General rule

who = personen

which = dieren / dingen

that = personen / dieren / dingen         (informeel)

Bijzin = noodzakelijk

Een bijzin (extra informatie) is noodzakelijk als je het nodig hebt om te begrijpen over wie of wat de zin gaat. 

Je mag who, which of that weglaten. 

VB:           This is the man (who) I was talking about.

                  Dancing is a hobby (which) I can't get enough of. 

Bijzin = extra

Een bijzin bevat soms alleen extra informatie, wat niet noodzakelijk is. Dat staat altijd tussen komma's. 

Je gebruikt who of which.  

VB:           My brother, who likes fishing, bought a fishing rod.

                  The jewellery, which is hand-made, looks great. 

Bijzin + voorzetsel

Soms staat er een voorzetsel vooraan (formeel) of achteraan de bijzin. 

Gebruik who / which (/ whom).

VB:                The gym which we always practice in is closed. 

                       The gym, in which we always practice, is closed. 

Whose

whose = van iemand (bezit)

VB:            The girls, whose passion is dancing, went to the club.
