A Christian King
  • In the year 481 Clovis became king of the Franks. 
  • Under him the Frankish Empire became the strongest kingdom in Western Europe. 
  • Clovis converted to Christianity and forced the people in his empire to do the same.

Why was Clovis so powerful?
  1. He was a good military leader.
  2. He worked closely with the church in Rome. The leaders of the church were powerful and well educated. They helped him with the government. Clovis helped the church in expanding their power.

Charlemagne

After Clovis' death, the Frankish Empire fell apart. The empire was divided among his four sons. After centuries of war, Charlemagne was crowned king of the Franks in 768.
