What's the 1st thing you should always do when starting a new text?

• Always read the title first
• Look at pictures or words that stand out
• Determine what the main topic of the text is

• Read the first question incl. the possible answers 
• Check which part of the text you need to read and read that

Which words are really important and should you highlight while reading?

While working through the questions make sure:

• you read the entire text
• you highlight linking words 
• you keep track of what the main topic/idea/opinion of the text is

When should you use a dictionary?

1. whenever there's a word I don't know
2. only when the word is needed to understand the text
3. only when the word will help me answer one of the questions
4. never, dictionaries are useless

which is NOT a good strategy for guessing the meaning of a word

1. is the word positive or negative?
2. is the word similar to a word in a different language?
3. look at the word before and after
4. do I know what the sufixes mean?

Dictionary use

Only use a dictionary when:

• There's a word in the question that you don't know
• There's a word in text that you need in order to answer a question
• There's a word in the gap questions you don't know

How should you answer open questions?

1. Always in English
2. Always in Dutch
3. Always in Dutch unless you have to quote from the text
4. You can choose which you prefer

OPEN QUESTION

2 types:

• Answer in Dutch (first highlight correct English passage, then carefully translate)
• Answer in English (find the correct quote and carefully copy the words that you need to write down) 

MULTIPLE CHOICE

• focus on main point of a paragraph

avoid looking at examples

• focus on text relations

use linking words

2 types:

• linking words

know the 'verbanden' of the linking words 

read the sentence before the gap and theone with the gap

• any other type of word

read 1 more sentence than the sentence in which the gap is

• choose words in the statement that you might easily find
• make sure the entire statement is correct
