Passive & Active sentences

Welke zin is "active" en welke zin is "passive"?

1. Donald ate the cookies.
2. The cookies were eaten.

Actief en passief

Active (bedrijvend, doet de actie):

Het onderwerp doet iets - John  wrote a letter.

Passive (lijdend, ondergaat de actie):

Het onderwerp doet niets - A letter was written by John.

Make this sentence passive:

The teacher explained the grammar.

The answer:

The grammar was explained by the teacher.

Usage (gebruik)

• Om de nadruk te leggen op wat er gebeurt, niet op wie wat doet.
• Als het onbekend is wie de actie doet.

Vb 1: The test was graded by the teacher. (niet belangrijk welke docent.)

Vb 2: The test was graded. (rara door wie?)

'by'

Hoe maak je de passive?

Vorm van to be (was/were) + voltooid deelwoord.

Past simple: Jack built a house.

Passive past simple: A house was built by Jack

Past simple: Jack sold houses.

Passive past simple: 

Indirect speech

• Verleden tijd - je herhaalt iets wat al gezegd is.
• Soms moet je het persoonlijk voornaamwoord aanpassen.

Bijvoorbeeld: We all really want a cat at home.

(Indirect speech): They said they all really wanted a cat at home.

Probeer deze zinnen aan te passen:

I work in a bank.

I am working today. 

I was at the doctor all morning.

Answers:

He said he worked in a bank.

She said she was working today.

He said he was at the doctor all morning.

I -> Kan beide he of she zijn als je geen context hebt.

Asking questions

Who, what, where, when, how, why 

Vb: Who stole the biscuits?

Vb: Where were you last night?

Gesloten vragen Do/does/did:

 Vb: Do you want to go to the park?

Did you like that movie?

Modals

Voor als je iets niet helemaal zeker weet

Na een modal  het hele werkwoord

Voorbeelden van modals:

can, could, might, may, 

Je kunt ook modal + have + voltooid deelwoord hebben

Vb: You could have done that already.

Modal ontkenningen

Can wordt can't

could wordt couldn't

Máár

may wordt NIET may'nt altijd voluit schrijven. May not

Might wordt ook NIET might'nt altijd voluit!  Might not

He may not be coming.
