What are you going to learn?

By the end of the session you will be able to:

• Explain the difference between a hazard and risk
• Describe what contact dermatitis is and this can be avoided in the workplace
• Identify different hair and scalp conditions and how this influence your shampoo and conditioning service

Hazard vs Risk

What is the difference between and hazard and a risk?

Someone could slip.

Contact dermatitis

• Contact dermatitis is a skin condition which nearly all hairdressers will suffer with at some point in their career.
  
• It is caused by continual contact with a substance/substances which irritate the skin. Constant wet working and having chemicals (like shampoo and conditioner) on the hands causes the skin dry out, crack, weep, bleed and can become infected if not looked after.
  
• This can end a hairdressers career which is why we need to look after our hands.
  

Task

Can you find out about the following:

• Chemically damaged hair
  
• Environmentally damaged hair
  
• Product build up hair

Normal hair

IDENTIFIED BY :

• Good elasticity and porosity test results
  
• Hair will appear shiny and cuticles smooth
  

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Shampoo and surface conditioner for normal hair.
  
• Should the client have a different scalp condition you would need to use a suitable shampoo for that scalp condition.
  

Chemical Damage 

IDENTIFED BY :

• Questioning the client
  
• Poor elasticity and porosity tests
  
• Visible damage to the hair
  
• May be dull
  
• Hair can tangle easy
  

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Moisturising shampoo and surface conditioners for coloured or chemically treated hair
  
• Hair will also benefit from a penetrating conditioner to strengthen the cortex and smooth the cuticle
  

What is the cause?

Heat Damage

• Visible damage to the hair
  
• May be dull
  
• Hair can tangle easy
  

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Moisturising shampoo and surface conditioner
  
• Hair will also benefit from a penetrating conditioning treatment.
  

Environmental Damage

IDENTIFED BY :

• Questioning the client
  
• Poor elasticity and porosity tests
  
• Visible damage to the hair
  
• May be dull
  
• Hair can tangle easy
  

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Moisturising shampoo and surface conditioner
  
• Products with a build in UV protection may also benefit the hair
  

Sun lightens natural and artificial colour causing it to dry out and the cuticles to open

Chlorine and seawater can dry the hair out

Wind can cause hair to knot together

Dry hair

IDENTIFED BY :

• Hair which is dull and lacklustre and
  
• in appearance
  
• Raised cuticles causing the hair
  
• to feel rough when carrying out a porosity test.

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Moisturising shampoo and surface conditioner
  
• Products with a build in UV protection may also benefit the hair
  
• If the hair is very curly (T4) and fine you would need to be careful not to weigh the hair down. 
  

Damage caused by heat/ chemicals/ environment.

Hair can be naturally dry (especially curly hair) as the sebum cannot travel down the shaft of the hair.

Product build up

IDENTIFED BY :

• Hair may look oily with viable excess product
  
• on the hair
  
• Hair may look dull and lacklustre due to the hair being coated in product
• A white residue may be able to be scraped off the hair

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Clarifying shampoo to remove the build up
  
• Multiple shampoos may need to be done if there is a large build up
  
• Light surface conditioner to be used after
  

CAUSE:

Overuse of products

Incorrect products used

Incorrect shampoo or poor shampooing technique

Oil based styling/finishing products used meaning a barrier between water and shampoo is created.

Oily Hair

IDENTIFED BY :

• Questioning the client
  
• Hair will appear wet looking and may clump together
• Hair will be dull and lacklustre
  

PRODUCTS TO USE:

• Clarifying shampoo and light surface conditioner
  
• If the client has overactive sebaceous glands then use a shampoo specifically for oily hair that will benefit the client
  

CAUSE:

Overactive sebaceous glands,

Poor shampooing technique at home

Incorrect products used at home

Client has been sweating

Hair is due to be washed

Poor diet.

What causes damaged hair?

How to identify

White/ pink scalp 

Will look shiny and can smell

Very white scalp. May be white flakes on the scalp

Visible product build up.

Scalp can look dry, flaky or oily.
