Kunnen= can & be able to

Modal verb of ability= iets 'kunnen'

1. Vaardigheden --> can, cannot en can't

2. In staat / gelegeheid zijniom iets te doen --> be able to

3. als je wilt zeggen dat iemand iets kon gebruik je was / were able to + hele werkwoord.

I ___ swim very well.

Moeten= must, have to, should

Modal verbs of obligation (= verplichting)

1. Should (not) + hele werkwoord:  = zou moeten / advies --> You should study harder.

2. must (not) + hele werkwoord als JIJ vindt dat iets (niet) moet / sprake van verbod. 

I must help her / You musn't overtake here.

have to

3.  have to + hele werkwoord om zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting uit te drukken. Iets moet van iemand anders.

I have to submit this report tomorrow.

4. don't have to / doesn't have to + hele werkwoord = niet hoeven

You don't have to go if  you don't want to. 

You ___ (moet doen) your homework or you'll get a punishment.
