ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NOTES:

Slide 6 - Open vraag

The heart
- is a double pump
 - left side pumps oxygen rich
    blood (red) towards your
    body
- right side pumps oxygen
   poor blood (blue) towards
   your lungs

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

left = right
Yes, in the picture the left side is blue - this indicates oxigen poor blood, but actually it is the right side of the heart
We always see the heart from the front, but we consider it our own heart.
When I raise my right hand, you will not say that it is my left hand...

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

The heart
- four chambers
- 2 atria
- 2 ventricles

Blood always enters the heart via an atrium

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Blood flow
Bloodflow in the heart is a
one-way street.
It follows the direction of the arrows

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

From which chamber of the heart does blood leave to go to the lungs?
A
Right ventricle
B
Right atrium
C
Left ventricle

Slide 12 - Quizvraag

Which chamber produces the highest pressure in the blood?
A
Right atrium
B
Left atrium
C
Left ventricle

Slide 13 - Quizvraag

How is it possible that blood only flows one way?
Because:
A
of the blood pressure
B
blood cells know how to flow
C
there are valves
D
how the heart contracts

Slide 14 - Quizvraag

Valves
Valves only open in one way,
just like a door, if you push from one side the door opens easily, but if you push from the other side you will push it even closer...

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

one way valve
As you can see, a valve only opens in one direction

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Slide 17 - Sleepvraag

Blood supply to the heart
The heart works really hard and needs a lot of glucose and oxygen for its respiration.
This is provided by the coronary arteries that run on the the outside of the heart.

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Blood vessels types
  • Arteries - carry blood away from the heart
  • Veins - Carry blood back to the heart
  • Capillaries - go to every cell in the body (oxygen and co2 exchange)

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Arteries
  • Elastic walls which stretch
  • They contract and bounce back to force the blood along ('Pulse')

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

Veins
  • Are wider than arteries
  • Thinner walls
  • pressure is much lower
  • blood is squeezed along by your muscles
  • Flow is helped by valves

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Capillaries
  • Smallest blood vessels
  • Very thin walls
  • Large surface area

  • Easy for gas exchange

Slide 23 - Sleepvraag

Which statement is true?
A
In general, the circulatory system looks like this: Heart -> veins -> capillaries -> arteries -> heart
B
In general, the circulatory system looks like this: Heart -> arteries -> capillaries -> veins -> heart

Slide 24 - Quizvraag

Which blood vessel has a wall which is only 1 cell thick?
A
All of them
B
Arteries
C
Capillaries
D
Veins

Slide 25 - Quizvraag

A
1.artery 2. vein 3. capillary
B
1. capillary 2. artery 3. vein
C
1. vein 2. capillary 3 artery
D
all answers are wrong

Slide 26 - Quizvraag

Naming of the blood vessels
  • Arteries: organ it is going to + artery, for example pulmonary artery
  • Veins: organ it is coming from + vein, for example pulmonary vein
  • Capillaries: too many to name, just lung capillaries
