What different future tenses do you know? When do you use them?

Slide 2 - Open vraag

Present simple
The present simple is used for set times/schedules. Think of: public transport, opening and closing times of stores, school/work times.

"Our train leaves at 4:15."
"The supermarket closes at 6."
"Our next lesson is on Thursday."

Present continuous
An event that has been agreed upon and that is happening soon within a short time span. 

"Next week I am eating out with my girlfriend."
"In July we're going on holiday in Italy."

To be going to
Be + going to can refer to the future when there is a plan or an intention to do something.

"They are going to move to a new house soon."
"When is she going to write her second novel?"

To be going to
Be + going to is used for predictions that are supported by evidence.

"Look at those clouds! It's going to rain."
"Is it already 12 o'clock? Oh dear, I'm going to be late for school."

Will
Will is used for:
- Promises
- Decisions (made at the moment of speaking)
- Predictions without proof

"The phone is ringing; I will answer it."
"We will win the lottery this year, for sure!"

Shall
You have to use shall when proposing things, or when asking for people's preferences/decisions. In general, use shall for I and we, and will for you/they/she/he/it.

"Shall we talk about something else?"
"When shall I come and visit you?"

Future perfect
The future perfect is used to talk about something that will be completed before a specific time in the future.

Will + have + past participle

By 2050, electric cars will have replaced petrol cars.

Future continuous
The future continuous is used for:
future events that will be going on for a longer period of time
future events that will be going on at a specific time

Will/shall + be + verb + ing

In an hour, I will be meeting my boss to talk about my raise.
He will be playing basketball all weekend.
