Past Simple vs. Past Continuous

Past Simple: Something that has already taken place in the past and is completly finished. 

Past Continuous: Somthing that has happened in the past but went on for a longer period of time in the past.  

Past Simple

Past Simple:  verb + -ed or irregular verb form

Signal words: Yesterday, last... week/month/year, a minute ago

I walked to school yesterday

I ran up that hill an hour ago.

Last year I worked in a restaurant.

Past continous

Past Continuous: to be (was/were) + verb + ing

Signal words: While... , at the (same) time, when

I was walking to school when the package arrived.

We were running up the hill when you called me.

While I was working in a restaurant, it started raining
