At the end of this lesson... 
- You know what a polis is
- You can tell the difference between a Greek city-state and a modern city
- You can two differences between the Agora and the Acropolis

Examples of Greek city states (poleis): Sparta, Athens, Corinth.

They all had the same layout, with an Agora and an Acropolis
and every polis controlled the surrounding lands. 

The cities and surrounding lands had their own government, laws, coins and army.

Acropolis:
Fortress of the city
Highest point of the city
Temples are built here 
Place to worship gods

People came here to worship the gods and for protection when the polis was at war. 
Agora:
Market square
Place to trade 
Place to discuss politics


People came here to buy and sell their products and to have a chat.

Greece does not have a lot of fertile land so they had to start colonies outside of the city-state or even outside of Greece.

A colony  was a new city, with strong links to the old city.
These new colonies were built all over Europe.
