Present continuous - Exeptions

Verbs ending in -e: have, drive, write

He is having dinner.

Verbs ending in -c: panic, picnic

Verbs ending in -l: label, cancel, travel

verbs ending in single vowel + single consonant: sit, swim, put
I am sitting on a chair. 

Verbs ending in -ie: lie, tie, die

He is lying to me.

Present Continuous - Use

You use the present continuous to talk about things going on (around) now - things that started in the past and are still going on

I am falling in love.

We're learning English right now.

Time expressions: Now, at the moment, this year, nowadays

Use the present continuous:
The barber ....... his hair.
(to cut)

Use the present continuous:

Tag Questions

• Tag questions come at the end of a sentence
• We use question tags to check something 
• Your name is John, isn't it?
• Your name isn't John, is it?

• The movie is great, ........?
• The movie = it
• Verb (to be, can, have, do, will, should)? Yes - to be (is)
• The movie is great, isn't it?

If the sentence is positive, the question tag is negative

If the sentence is negative, the question tag is positive

Verbs to repeat:

• To be
• Can
• Have
• Do
• Will
• Should
• If there is no verb like the ones above, use do

I am right, ...?

The match starts at 21:00, ... ?

Tell them explicitly again:

After a positive sentence, the tag is negative. After a negative sentence, tag is positive.

The speaker actually asks: Is this right? Do you agree? (in Dutch)

One vs Ones

We use one or ones if we do not want to repeat the already mentioned noun (het al genoemde zelfstandig naamwoord). One(s) replaces  the noun. 

One -> refers to the SINGULAR noun (enkelvoud)

Ones -> refers to the PLURAL noun (meervoud)

I don't want the green apples. I want the red apples.

I don't want the green apples. I want the red ones. 

Do you want a big dog or a small dog?

Gebruik: als je een zelfstandig naamwoord wilt herhalen in de zin. Eerst komt het zelfstandig naamwoord en daarna one/ones.
