Catholic.
During the Middle Ages the only church.
The sermon was in Latin.
The bible was in Latin.
The churches are heavily decorated.

A reformed church starting in the 16th century.

Martin Luther
He lived from 1483 till 1548.
He was a priest himself.
He knew the church well, and had some criticism on how the catholic church operated.
He wrote 95 points down and pinned it on the church in Wittenberg in 1517.

Criticism
Martin main points were:
People should not worship statues and saints.
The church should stop selling
indulgences
and stop people from giving money to get into heaven.
The bible should not be in Latin.

Reaction of the church.
The pope was angry and wrote Martin an angry letter.
Martin burned the letter and continued criticising the church.
Martin became a
heretic,
and was no longer welcome in the church.
But his life was in danger too. Killing a
heretic
was not a crime but a great deed.

Reformation
Many people agreed with Luther.
They split from the catholic church and were called Lutherans.
This is how the
reformation
started.
It also marked the beginning of violence against the catholics.
Luther himself wanted to change peacefully.

Consequences
The reformation also had consequences of government.
The German states did not listen to their emperor Charles V.
Charles V wanted a catholic state. The German leaders wanted to choose for themselfs.
He even wanted to fight over it, but his army was too weak.
Charles V was forced to sign the
Treaty of Ausburg.
