Many teachers like to combine open and closed questions, depending on the subject and skills they are focussing on. Open questions give students more freedom and opportunity. Yet there are many different ways of using them effectively during a lesson.

Effective methods to enhance learners’ metacognitive skills

Metacognition: a fancy word for something we all do every day
Brendan Conway-Smith is a PhD candidate at Carleton University, who teaches cognitive science to undergraduates. He is an expert on metacognition and has a number of peer-reviewed publications on the subject.Brendan firmly believes that one of the most important ideas in history involves the human ability to understand our own mind and direct it beneficially. Our education specialist Thomas Courtley interviews Brendan on what metacognition really means.
Bring the world into your classroom: Critical Thinking
Critical thinking has become more prevalent than ever. From politically charged broadcasting organisations, the unending deluge of ‘fake news’ and the age of social media “experts”, the students of today are more exposed to bias, reporting by agenda and the dangerous proliferation of falsehoods than any generation before them. It is high on many schools’ priority lists, to equip the youth of today to have a healthy scepticism of what they see and read and educate them on the danger of untrustworthy sources, and false information. Coinciding with this, educators are looking for ways to communicate healthily and respectfully about real modern-world topics; from wars across Europe to tackling issues like race and gender, critical thinking is the most adaptive way of ensuring your students have the chance to consider their own opinions about the world around them.
Diamond 9 Ranking
In Diamond 9 Ranking, students are given nine statements, texts, concepts or photos, which they then have to rank in the shape of a diamond (diamond). The item most important, interesting or valuable to the student is placed at the top, while the least important or interesting item is placed at the bottom. This is, of course, dependent on the type of task you wish to set - levels of understanding in a topic? Important causes for an event? Most likely results of an experiment? It's really entirely up to you!
Verbalising what you are thinking
Let's talk about metacognition for what it often is. Abigail Hawkins, a SENCO for 25+ years, is now the director of SENsible SENCOand SENDCO solutions. She created her companies and their websites to help out all SENCOs across the UK, knowing how hard their role can be. We interviewed her about her experience and tips concerning metacognition, and how to keep it simple and effective.

YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7 TRANSITION
This set of six lessons has been designed to support Year Six pupils as they begin to think about their move to Secondary Education. The content has been designed to support both pastoral care (with a focus on wellbeing and positive mental health) and some of the more practical matters that affect this group (timetabling, walking to school etc).
The slides are fully adaptable, so can easily be changed to suit your school's unique context.
The lessons link directly to the PSHE Association's Programme of Study for KS1-5 and can compliment your existing PSHE programme, as well as the transition resources provided by your feeder secondaries.
5 benefits of fostering a reflective practice
Metacognition is related to reflection and self-awareness. For students it is the process of thinking about one's learning. For teachers, on the other hand, it is the process of thinking about their teaching and its effect on their students. It comprises everything that takes place when teachers plan, monitor, evaluate, and make changes to their teaching methods.

3 ways to promote critical thinking by asking question
There are many active learning strategies that you can implement with your students to promote critical thinking. One of them is asking your students questions that stimulate deeper thinking.
5 scaffold teaching strategies to stimulate active learning
Scaffolding is an instructional method by which learning material is broken down into smaller content and skills that fall in the learner’s development zone. As a form of active learning, scaffolding prompts learners to actively engage in each step of the learning process. This allows them to practise skills, retrieve information, and receive feedback.
Exploring discrimination | Stories that Move
In this free lesson, students examine how discrimination happens, who is responsible and what actions you can take if you witness or are a victim of discrimination. They focus on the stories of two young people who have experienced discrimination, and explore their own reactions through questions and exercises.
Encourage your students to become active learners
Active learning is a very natural way of learning. It focuses on how students learn - not only on what they learn. They are stimulated to ‘think hard’ and engage with the learning material. All teachers wish for a classroom full of active, engaged learners! Is that realistic though? Can you encourage all your students to become active learners?
5 ways flipped learning boosts an active classroom
The word says it all. As you know, flipped learning is a way of learning in which the traditional lesson structure is inverted, flipped around. Students are introduced to new topics with instruction material they can dive into at home, and the traditional ‘homework’ is done in the class.
3 tips on how to design perfect hinge questions
“Do we need to go over this one more time?” How often have you asked yourself this while teaching? Most probably hundreds of times.
