• France occupied the Netherlands from 1795-1815.

• After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815: The Netherlands had to become strong in case France tries anything again...

A kingdom

• The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg are combined:  United Kingdom of the Netherlands. 
• William I becomes the king.

Orange

• William belongs to the family of Orange.  
• They had an important role in governing the Netherlands before 1815.

Constitution

• A constitution: The countries most important laws. The constitution states how a country is to be governed and what the rights of its citizens are. 

• The constitution was revised. 

Represent

• The constitution: people's opinions have to be taken into consideration.
• How? The parliament!
• William is not really happy with this....

Loophole!

• Parliament  consists of two assemblies: the First Chamber and the Second Chamber. 
• They hold the legislative power: the part of the government that decides laws and rules. 
• Second Chamber: chosen by the governers of the provinces...

First Chamber...

• Is chosen by William directly,
• If the Second Chamber runs a bill the First Chamber has to approve of it. 
• William still has a way of stopping things he doesn't like.
