A group of people with the same rights and same set position in society.

The society of France is divided in three estates.

Nobility, clergy and citizens/ farmers

-They had there own set of law

-Nobility had all the high jobs on the army and civil service

-They didn't have to pay taxes.

And the common people?

The citizens and farmers had to pay all the taxes.
