Tag questions

When to use

You are asking confirmation. 

You want the other person to think the same thing you do.

In Dutch:

ja toch, niet dan?

Tag questions: how to form

Als er een vorm staat van: to be, can/could, to have (got), to do, dan herhaal je deze vorm. Let op: kijk goed of dit tegenwoordige of verleden tijd is. 

Staat er een ander werkwoord dan gebruik je do (not) of does (not). Bij de verleden tijd gebruik je did (not).

Examples

To be, can/could, to have, to do

1. These pants don't fit, do they?
2. You are the new student, aren't you?

Naast het werkwoord herhaal je ook het onderwerp. Dat is soms makkelijk zoals in zin 2, maar kan ook lastig zijn zoals zin 1. 

Is het: I, you, he, she, it, you, we, of they?

Examples

Herhaal eerst het werkwoord en dan het onderwerp. Let erop of het tegenwoordig (1 & 3) of verleden tijd is (2).
