IJs verandert in water wanneer/als je het verwarmt.

If + present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)
hoofdzin + 'present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)

Slide 22 - Slide

Conditionals- 0
- We use the zero conditional to talk about absolute truths/facts
Ice turns to water when/if you heat it

AND:

- imperative (gebiedende wijs)
If you see Frank, tell him to call me

- modals/modal auxilliaries
If you should find my pen, you can keep it.

Slide 23 - Slide

Conditionals- 1
We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible.

1. If I study hard, I will pass the exam

'Als ik hard  studeer, zal ik het examen halen'

If + present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)
hoofdzin + 'will' + hele werkwoord

Slide 24 - Slide

Conditionals -2
The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in reality.

2. If I studied hard, I would pass the exam.
Als ik hard zou studeren, zou ik het examen halen (maar ik doe het niet dus waarschijnlijk  haal ik het niet).

If he were older, I would punch him.
If + past simple, hoofdzin: would + hele ww.

Slide 25 - Slide

Conditionals-3
We use the third conditional to talk about something in the past that did not happen.

3. If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam

Als ik hard gestudeerd zou hebben, zou ik het examen gehaald hebben.

if + past perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord)
hoofdzin: would + have + voltooid deelwoord
