WHEN DO YOU USE WHICH?
There are many different rules for when to use
the -ing form or the to-infinitive.

Today, I will only explain the rules for the verbs remember, forget, used to, mean and try.

Slide 10 - Slide

To keep it simple, I will only explain a few verbs that have a different meaning, depending on which one you use.
REMEMBER / FORGET
If you remember or forgot something that happened in the past, you use the -ing form
I remember locking the door.
I won't forget doing that.

I will remember to lock the door.
I won't forget to do that.
If you need to remember or (not) forget something that hasn't happened yet, you use the to-infinitive

Slide 11 - Slide

terugdenken aan, herinneren
onthouden / vergeten iets te gaan doen
USED TO
If something was a habit in the past
you use the to-infinitive
We used to read every day.
He used to go to school.
We are used to reading every day.
He is used to going to school.
If you are familiar with doing something,
you use the -ing form and "to be"

Slide 12 - Slide

gewoonte in het verleden
gewend zijn om iets te doen
MEAN
If you mean "to intend",
you use the to-infinitive
I didn't mean to scare you.
This means starting all over.

If you mean "to have a particular result",
you use the -ing form

Slide 13 - Slide

bedoelen, de bedoeling zijn
een specifieke uitkomst hebben, betekenen

TRY
If you mean "attempting to do something",
you use the to-infinitive
I tried to convince him to let us go home early.
Try holding your breath to stop sneezing.
If you mean "testing if something works",
you use the -ing form
