How do you say something belongs to someone in English?

Dutch

Indicates that there is more than one

What does " 's " mean?

• Used to show that a thing belongs to someone or something
• Singular noun: apostrophe + s  ('s)
• Plural noun: apostrophe  (')
  

Example

The cat's couch (one cat)

The cats' couch (two or more cats)

Notice how the number of couches does not matter

	one couch	more than one couch
one cat	the cat 's couch	the cat 's couches
more than one cat	the cats ' couch	the cats ' couches

This structure can be used for whole phrases

The cat next door's bed

(the bed of the cat next door)

The Queen of France's cat

(the cat of the queen of France)
