Modals = hulpwerkwoorden
Give some examples:

Eigenschappen:

• ze veranderen niet van vorm (alle personen hetzelfde*)
• Na een hulpwerkwoord krijg je altijd het hele werkwoord
• Vragend en ontkennend op z'n Nederlands.
• Let op!!* to have to is uitzondering. I have to go? Do you have to go. He has to work hard/ Does he have to work hard?

Can gebruik je voor een VAARDIGHEID die je wel of niet hebt. (YES,I CAN!)

I can swim very well.   He can run very fast. 

CAN VS COULD

Verschil can/ could

Can gebruik je voor:

•  een vaardigheid (ik kan het!)        
• een verzoek. Can you help me?
• vraag om of geef toestemming.  Can I go to the bathroom? Yes, you can. 

Could gebruik je voor:

• Beleefder dan can in vraagzinnen (bijvoorbeeld tegen vreemden).  Could you show me the way?
• verleden tijd van can. I could swim when I was 5 years old
• of iets gaat misschien gebeuren in de toekomst, maar je weet niet zeker dat het gaat gebeuren. Bring an umbrella because it could rain tonight.

Verschil must/ should/ have to 

Weet jij het verschil in betekenis tussen deze zinnen?

Must gebruik je als:

omdat jij zelf vindt dat iets moet gebeuren (of het sterk af of aanraadt). You must watch that new show! It is great. 

Have to (has to) gebruik je als:

Als het moet gebeuren omdat iemand anders dat zegt. Het van een ander MOET (wetten, regels). You have to stop for a red light. 

Should gebruik je als:

een advies/ een suggestie/ het juiste om te doen. You should get eight hours of sleep!

Don't/doesn't have to gebruik je als:

iets niet nodig is/ hoeft niet

Vraagzinnen maken met modals

Als je vraagzinnen met hulpwerkwoorden moet maken, dan zet je het hulpwerkwoord vooraan in de zin.

She is able to move her feet

Is she able to move her feet?

My mother should eat more vegetables

Should my mother eat more vegetables?

Bij het werkwoord "have" maak je een vraagzin met do/does + have

You have to turn your phone off

Do you have to turn your phone off?

Ontkenningen maken met modals

Als je ontkenningen  met hulpwerkwoorden moet maken, dan zet je "not" achter het hulpwerkwoord 

She is able to move her feet

She isn't able to move her feet

My mother should eat more vegetables

My mother shouldn't eat more vegetables

Bij het werkwoord "have" maak je een ontkenning met doesn't have of don't have

You have to turn your phone off

You don't have to turn  your phone off
