Netherlands during the occupation

• Most of the Dutch adapted and did nothing.
  --> accommodation
• A small proportion (4%) were pro-German, mostly NSB and SS.
  --> calloboration
• Resistance: helping people in hiding, distributing illegal newspapers and carrying out attacks.
• Hunger Winter (1944-1945): Western Netherlands lacked food and fuel.

The Liberation

• Allies invade the Netherlands (Sept. 1944)
• Battle of Arnhem fails.
• --> Southern Netherlands is liberated, but not the rest.
• May 5, 1945: Germany surrenders.
• Great joy, but also revenge actions against 'wrong Dutch'.
