Powerful Prefixes and Sizzling Suffixes

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to use prefixes and suffixes to enhance your vocabulary and understand word meanings.

What are Prefixes?

Prefixes are word parts added to the beginning of a base word to change its meaning or create a new word.

Common Prefixes

Some common prefixes include:

 'un-', 're-', 'dis-', 'pre-', 'mis-', 'im-', 'in-', 'non-', 'over-', and 'sub-'.

Prefix Practice

Match the prefix to the correct base word: 

 1. __able -->                                                            (a) happy 

 2. __un -->                                                              (b) important 

 3. __mis -->                                                            (c) like 

 4. __re -->                                                               (d) do 

 5. __in -->                                                                (e) readable

What are Suffixes?

Suffixes are word parts added to the end of a base word to change its meaning or create a new word.

Common Suffixes

Some common suffixes include '-ful', '-less', '-ly', '-er', '-est', '-ing', '-ed', '-s', '-es', and '-able'.

Mastering the Present Perfect

What is the Present Perfect?

The Present Perfect is a verb tense used to describe actions or states that started in the past and continue into the present or have a result in the present.

Forming the Present Perfect

The Present Perfect is formed by using the auxiliary verb 'have' (in present tense) followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Examples

• I have finished my homework. 
• They have traveled to many countries. 
• She has lived in this city for five years.

Time Expressions

Time expressions such as 'already', 'just', 'yet', 'ever', and 'never' are commonly used with the Present Perfect.

Difference from Simple Past

The Present Perfect is used when the time of the action is not specified or is still ongoing, while the Simple Past is used for actions that happened at a specific time in the past.

Practice Activity

Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in the Present Perfect tense.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.

The students indicate here (in question form) with which part of the material they still have difficulty. For the teacher, this not only provides insight into the extent to which the students understand/master the material, but also a good starting point for the next lesson.
