  • At the end of today's class you can come up with two example sentences that clearly illustrate when you need to use 'if' and when you need to use 'when' in a sentence.

  • Why would we have to look at the different situations in which you use either 'if' or 'when'?

  • Zero conditional
  • In situaties en beweringen die algemeen van aard zijn en/of op iedereen kunnen slaan, mag je zowel 'if' als 'when' gebruiken.
  • If / When you heat ice, it turns to water.
  • If / When you're very ill, you should see a doctor.
  • Hoofdzin --> present simple

  • If --> je bent niet zeker
  •  If I'm better, I'll visit you next week.
  • When --> iets gaat zeker of hoogstwaarschijnlijk gebeuren
  • We'll see each other at Christmas, when I come to eat at your place.

  • Voorwaarde,  mogelijkheid of waarschijnlijkheid (Stel dat ...)
  • Hoofdzin --> wat kunnen de gevolgen zijn als ...
  • 3 vormen
  • 1. If + simple present ... will/shall = het is mogelijk dat
  • 2. If + simple past ... would/should/could/might = het is niet waarschijnlijk dat
  • 3. If + past perfect ... would have/should have/ could have/ might have = het is onmogelijk dat ...., want je praat achteraf

  • First conditional/ Type 1 conditional
  • If I win this  race, I'll get a wonderful price. 
  • If you work harder, you'll pass your exams.

  • Second conditional / Type 2 conditional
  • If I won this race,  I would go out of my mind.
  • If you worked harder, you'd pass your exams.

  • Third conditional/Type 3 conditional
  • If I had won that race, I would have gone out of my mind.

  • Kan zowel voor als achteraan in de zin:
  • If you had asked me, I would have told you.
  • I would have told you, if you had asked me.
