Relative pronouns

Een betrekkelijk voornaamwoord heeft betrekking op een voorafgaand zelfstandig naamwoord of voorafgaand zinsdeel.

 

This is  the bike that was stolen. -> that verwijst naar bike

We had to cancel our holiday, which was a big disappointment. -> which verwijst naar We had to cancel our holiday

Relative pronouns

Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden gebruiken wij bij betrekkelijke bijzinnen.

Twee types: ‘noodzakelijke’ en ‘niet noodzakelijke’

Noodzakelijke:

This is the note which the teacher gave to me.

Niet noodzakelijke:

The car, which was delivered yesterday, wouldn’t start.

Who -> personen (whom na voorzetsel)

Dit is the man die mij hielp bij het wisselen van mijn autoband.

• This is the man who helped me change my tire.
• That is the man with whom I have played tennis all my life.

Relative pronouns

That – mag je gebruiken in plaats van who/which, maar alleen in noodzakelijke betrekkelijke bijzinnen.

 

Relative pronouns

Who / which / that -> mag weg als het voorwerp van de hoofdzin niet hetzelfde is als het onderwerp van de bijzin. 

That’s the man  (that) I have told you about.

• That’s the man – hoofdzin
  
• I have told you about – bijzin
  
• Man ≠ I – niet hetzelfde
