Erasmus
-Erasmus was a humanist: someone who studied classical literature and culture.

- Erasmus translated the Bible from Greek to Latin. He discovered many errors in the old version.

- Erasmus was one of the first people to criticise people from the Catholic Church.

Luther was critical of the church.
- He was against the sale of indulgences by the Catholic Church.

Karel V
Karel V nodigde Luther uit om op de Rijksdag te verschijnen. Luther kreeg hierbij de kans om zijn stellingen terug te nemen.
Luther
Luther nam zijn woorden niet terug. Hij zei de volgende beroemde woorden: "Hier sta ik, ik kan niet anders". Vervolgens werd hij door Karel V vogelvrij verklaard. De hertog van Saksen nam Luther in bescherming.

Protestant Churches
-Luther initiated a process that not much later would lead to the Protestant church. This gained more and more adherents. The process that was set in motion called the Reformation.

- Charles V was Catholic and opposed Protestantism. In 1555, the Peace of Augsburg was signed. This stipulated that each monarch could determine the faith in that area himself.
