We start at 9:03

Slide 2 - Slide

9:00-9:50
Leerdoel: Maak de leestekst interessanter/relevanter door het er eerst over te hebben en te vragen naar de meningen van leerlingen en of ze dit toevallig al ergens een keer hebben gezien

Make sure the students are sitting in their designated seats. They are not allowed to eat/drink anything but water. They have until the bell rings to fill their bottle and go to the bathroom. We start when the bell rings. Anyone not back by then is too late and will have to get a note. Phones in the bag and grab books/notebook/pens.
Program & Goals
New Chapter: Reading and theme words

At the end of the lesson I:
- know some new words to talk about after school activities
- know what Irish dancing is

Slide 3 - Slide

Overgang 'pauze' naar doelen: alright everybody, good morning. Make sure the phones are in the bag and your books are on the table.'

Go over the plan for today, we are starting a new chapter with the theme 'after school', so we'll be learning some new words and we'll be reading a text about Irish dancing.
Ask a student to read out the goals. Students are quiet and listen to me and each other.

until 9:05
Homework
Do: ex. 24 and 25 on wb. p. 77-79 and the hand-out you received. You checked this yourself. Questions?

Unit 4: After school
What do you do after school (for fun)?
Do you have a (part-time) job?

I will ask you to briefly answer these 2 questions (full English sentences e.g. "After school, I like to ...")
20 seconds to think about it.

Slide 5 - Slide

until 9:15
Mention the new chapter is about 'after school', which could be fun things or maybe even part-time jobs.
Tell students they have 20 seconds to think of an answer and then I'll ask quite a few of them to give me their (brief) answer in English so everybody has to participate and there is an urgency for all of them.

Possibly: write down some key words on the whiteboard.

Continue: alright, the theme words will be about part-time jobs and applying for them, but first... (next slide)

5-7 min until 9:15
Theme words

Slide 6 - Slide

wages - loon
part-time job - bijbaan
to take on - aannemen
C - Reading: Irish dancing
P. 55 in your sb.
Any dancers here?
What is Irish dancing?

A short clip

Slide 7 - Slide

until 9:20
We will read a text about Irish dancing. Does anyone know what Irish dancing is?
To introduce the text, I will show them a short clip of what Irish dancing looks like after I've asked the class if they happen to know what it is. The video is from the group that is talked about in the text.
Has anybody ever seen this in real life before? Or maybe somewhere else such as on Tiktok?
Tell them I have seen it both live at a Europe themed themepark in the US as well as that I follow an account on TikTok that does this.
C - Reading: Irish dancing
P. 55 sb. p. 89 wb.
Look at the title, the picture, the source and other words that might get your attention. What is this text about?

Massachusetts: massetjusits
corcairdhearg: kor-kir-jerig
Ceilidh: kaylee

Slide 8 - Slide

10 min - until max 9:30
We already know it's about Irish dancing of course, but in what context? Look at the title/pic/source/etc. What is the text about? (2-3 min)
Once we've done that, we'll read the text together. I will use the plattegrond for this for the foreseeable future. So starting off today is Bente, Jasmijn,  Daantje en Julia (I won't tell them that beforehand though, so everyone has to pay attention - Start with Daantje). Before we start reading focus on the pronounciation of a few words (on the board - I had to look some of them up myself too) - 3-4 min

Students listen to each other read and read along in their own book.
Exercises
What: Do the reading exercises 5, 6 and 7 on p. 89/90
How: You may work together in pairs, keep the volume low
Help: the text on p. 55 of your sb., each other, teacher.
Time: 15 min
Done: Do ex. 3+4 about the theme words
Outcome: This is your homework

Slide 9 - Slide

Until 9:46
Students do the reading exercises and then continue on with the theme words exercises.
Make sure students are quiet while I tell them what to do and ask a student to repeat back to me what they have to do now to make sure everyone knows what to do.

If they are not doing what they're supposed to be doing:
1. I will repeat what I want from them
2. I will give them a warning
3. I will put them somewhere else
4. I will make them do some 'strafwerk': words from B Dutch-English 3 times
They have to do this until the end of the lesson.

They may not leave early, they may not use their phone, they may not refuse to do the work. They may, however, if they're done with the work take out their reading book and read it.
Homework tomorrow
Do: Ex 3-7 on wb. p. 88-90
Study: words from C

Slide 10 - Slide

At 9:46 I will tell them about this homework and move on to the goals.
Goals
I'll ask someone to read these out loud and confirm.

- I know some new words to talk about after school activities
- I know what Irish dancing is

Slide 11 - Slide

Students do not have to raise their hands here, I will ask a student to read out the goals and ask if they have done both things (and to give an example of one of the words + their meaning and what Irish dancing is)

Students may not put their books away until I am done discussing the goals with them. If they do, they need to grab them again. No exceptions. (Unless I have told them they could in the step before this)
