Relative clauses

Relative clauses (betrekkelijke bijzinnen)

In een betrekkelijke bijzin staat extra informatie over iets of iemand. 

Deze bij zinnen beginnen vaak met who, which of that.

In het Nederlands gebruiken we die of dat.

VB.

Dansen is een hobby dat veel tijd in beslag neemt.

Dancing is a hobby that takes up a lot of my time.

Relative clauses

Hoe begin je de bijzin?

- Who: bij personen

- Which: bij dieren en dingen

- That: bij personen, dieren en dingen.

That is informeler dan who en which.

Relative clauses:
Sarah's dog.... is still young, always likes to play with a ball

Relative clauses:
Xander's best friend,... is older than he is, is working as a teacher

3. Jenny is the person ... has helped me the most.

Relative clauses:
The village .... I lived in has really changed

Uitzonderingen

Soms is de bijzin nodig om te weten over wie of wat de zin gaat.

In dit geval kan je who, which of what weglaten.

Er staan dan geen komma's in de zin

VB:

This is the man (who) I was talking about.

I bought the bicycle (that) the shop had on sale. 

Relative clauses

Soms geeft een bijzin extra informatie. Dan gebruiken we nooit that, maar altijd who of which.

Zo'n bijzin staat altijd tussen komma's.

My brother, who likes fishing, bought a fishing rod.

The jewellery, which is hand-made, looks great.
