Introduction

London Heathrow Airport is committed to the health and safety of its passengers, staff, and the organisations that operate at the airport. Some of the measures Heathrow has taken to ensure safety include:

• Security (DfT)
• Sustainability (CAA and ICAO)

Security

The government play a crucial role in improving security with the aviation industry. London Heathrow Airport will work with Department for Transport (DfT) when implementing security measures reflective of current requirements. The DfT will monitor security practices in UK airports.

Bag screening

• All cabin baggage will be X-ray screened.
  
• Place laptops and large electrical items separately in a tray.
  
• Put coins, keys, mobile phones and other small items in your coat or hand baggage.
  
• Place your hand baggage and coat into a tray.
  
• Place any liquid items (important: see 'Liquids - 100ml rule' above), correctly bagged, into the tray.
  
• Pushchairs and walking aids will be X-ray screened.
  
• Wheelchairs will be thoroughly searched.

Security

Body scanners

• Body-scanning equipment has been introduced at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 as part of a UK Government move to further strengthen security at airports.
  
• Passengers may be required to undergo the additional screening, having passed through the standard security search process. 
• The Department for Transport (DFT) requires that all passengers selected for screening must do so and images of passengers are destroyed after being viewed by trained security officers based elsewhere in the airport. 
• The process takes around seven seconds. 
• Anyone refusing to be scanned will be denied access to their flight.

London Heathrow Airport is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). One main objective of these organisations is to be sustainable.

London Heathrow's current Sustainability Report (published February 2024) demonstrates how the airport is adhering to sustainability  regulations.

In 2022, London Heathrow launched the first  Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) incentive programme. The objective of the programme is to provide SAF to airlines

On 28 November 2023, Virgin Atlantic made a historic flight from LHR to JFK

It was the first transatlantic flight on a Boeing 787 with Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines, which are 100% powered by SAF!

Quieter Nights, Quieter Flights

London Heathrow continues to focus on minimising the impact of noise at night on communities that are overflown.

Progress to date 

In 2023 there were a total of 193 late running departures against the target of no more than 235.  

In 2023 there were 144 nights with no flights between 23:30 and 04:30.
