Telling the Time: The Details

• Pick a side:

You want to know what time it is. What do you ask?

1. How late is it?
2. What time is it?

Other ways to ask for the time

• Could you tell me the time, please?
• What is the time, please? 
• How late is it, should not be used.

What time is it?

1. It is two o' clock.
2. It is two hour.

Why we can't say two hour

• Clocks as we know them were invented 700 years ago.
• Before that, people used sundials, which measure time differently.
• All of the sudden there was a problem. "What time is it?"
• Well, it is two of the sun, but three of the clock.
• People got lazy and three of the clock became three o' clock.

What time is it?

1. It is half two.
2. It is half past two.

Why we can't say half two

• Always say half past  ....
• In British English, you might hear 'half two', but that does not mean it's correct.
• Even though it is used by some people, it is rather informal and therefore you had better not use it.

What time is it?

1. It is quarter to three.
2. It is a quarter to three.

• In English we say a quarter to three.
• Quarter to three or quarter for three are incorrect.

Tien voor drie, tien over drie en tien voor half drie

What time is it?

1. It is ten to three.
2. It is ten for three.

Ten to three

• It is ten to three, not ten for three.
• The same goes for voor vijf voor drie.
• Vijf voor drie is five to three.

What time is it?

1. It is ten over three.
2. It is ten past three.

Ten past three

• It is ten past three, not ten over three.
• The same goes for quarter.
• We say it's a quarter past three, not over three.

AM vs PM

• AM means before midday.
• PM means after midday.
