In 57 BCE Caesar conquered the Southern-Netherlands.
De Celts who lived there were murdered or dispelled.
After that, the German tribes started living in this area.
The  most important group of German tribes were the Batavians

  • The Batavians didn't pay taxes
  • The Batavians helped protect the borders of the empire

The Romans and Germans interacted a lot with each other.
They traded with  each other and the Germans fought in the Roman Army.
Eventually the Germans took over the Roman culture.
