Word order in English sentences

In English, words are placed in a certain order.
A positive sentence usually has this order:

subject (S) - verb (V)  - object (O) - place (P) - time (T)

who - does - what - where - when

We (S) ride (V) our bike (O) to school (P) every morning (T)

Word order - adjectives

If you want to describe people places or things, you can add adjectives to sentences. These are placed before the noun or sometimes after a verb.

Have a look at this sentence from again. Where would you place the adjective? (see next slide)

We (S) ride (V) our bike (O) to school (P) every morning (T)

Where does the adjective (blue) go?
We ride our bikes to school every morning

1. We ride our bikes blue to school every morning
2. We ride our blue bikes to school every morning

Word order - place

Adverbials of place are added to sentences to explain where something is happening. Usually placed after object or after main verb.

I like dancing outside

There are a lot of people at my school

James and Brent are walking in the park

Adverbials of time are added to sentences to explain when something is happening. Usually placed after object or after main verb.

I like drinking tea in the afternoon

Do you like drinking coffee in the morning?
