Rule no 1: Backshift
Take a step back in time
Present Simple -> Past Simple
Jessie: "I  go to school by bike with you."
Maria: "Jessie said that she went to school by bike with me."
Present continuous > Past continuous
Jessie: "I am visiting my aunt ."
Maria: "Jessie said that she was visiting her aunt." 

Past simple   >   Past perfect
Jessie: "Last week I worked at McDonalds."
Maria: "Jessie said that she had worked at McDonalds the week before."

Rule no 2: make some changes
Change pronouns and references to time
Jessie: "My parents and I will visit our aunt."
Maria: "Jessie said that her parents and she would visit their aunt."
Jessie: Yesterday I was at school, but today I am at home."
Maria: "Jessie said that the day before she had been at school, but  that day she was at home."

Changes made in Reported/indirect speech
  1. Backshift in time ( stapje terug in de tijd, zie stencil)
  2. Persoonlijke en bezittelijke voornaamwoorden veranderen. I-> he,she; my-> his/her etc
  3. This-> that; these-> those; here-> there
  4. Bijwoordelijke bepalingen van tijd veranderen:
today-> that day
tomorrow -> the following.next day.
yesterday-> the day before
Last week-> the week before

Vervanging van zelfstandig nw.
One = die, degene, diegene (enkelvoud)

Ik vind die (bloem) het mooist.                                       
                             I think that one is the most beautiful.
Degene die mij helpt, krijgt een muffin.
                             The one that helps me, will get a muffin.
