Reporting verbs
good idea:                 suggest, advise, recommend
disagreeing:             argue, row, quarrel
social:                          talk, chat, gossip
volume:                       shout, whisper, scream
in a court of law:      admit, accuse, deny
expressing dislike: complain, protest, criticize
giving commands: tell, order, demand

Different verb patterns - depending on the reporting verb

Verb + that + clause 
Verb + to infinitive
Verb + person + (not) to +  infinitive (Latin: ACI construction)
Verb + ing
Verb + object + preposition + -ing

explain/complain

The student explained that she'd been very busy.

The guests complained that the meal was undercooked.

She asked me not to tell her mother about it.
The travel agent encouraged me to go travelling.

Verb + ing:
deny, recommend, suggest

The student suggested going to the library to study. 
He recommended watching the new James Bond movie.
They denied entering the room.

warn, argue, sell

My parents warned me against going into an acting career.
They argued him into withdrawing his complaint.
Mary sold me on ordering pizza for dinner. (convinced me to)
