Look at the painting. What can you say about the position of William III?

  • If you thought he looked a bit like royalty, you are correct. He actually became the English King in 1689 till his death in 1702.

  • Observing and experimentation started to become important.
  • People found rational answers.

Scientific Revolution!
  • Observing and experimentation led to new scientific laws. This method was called empirical thinking. You could prove why lightning existed.
  • A lot of new ideas started floating around, and replaced the religious ideas.
  • The Republic got their own university in Leiden in 1575. It was founded by William of Orange, because students couldn't go to other Universities in Spaninsh held territories.
  • The Republic had no censorship. Everybody could write what the liked!
