Active learning means that students are actively engaged with the learning material. This can lead to increased engagement and better learning outcomes. Here are some teaching methods and lesson ideas:

  • Quiz - Multiple quiz questions
  • Drag-and-drop - Practice words and/or concepts
  • Spinner - Random turn, word, and/or question
  • Debate - Poll statements
  • Guided fantasy - Writing with sound
  • Visible Thinking - See, think, wonder
  • Trivial Pursuit - Hotspots and spinner
  • Game of the Goose - Hotspots, images, and spinner

Quiz
A quiz is a quick way to test students' knowledge. In LessonUp, you can easily create quizzes or use an existing quiz from the lesson library.

How do I create a quiz myself?
  1. Create a lesson.
  2. Click on + Add.
  3. Click on Quiz.
  4. Copy the slide as many times as needed.
  5. Add questions and answers.

Note ⚠️: Don't forget to enter a correct answer!

Drag and drop question
With a drag and drop question, you can have students match words/images to other words/images. A perfect way to see if they can make connections.


How do I create a drag and drop question myself?
1. Open your lesson and click on +Add.
    Choose Drag and Drop Question.
2. Create a drag component at +Component.
3. Create a drop target at Drag target.
4. Connect the drag component (blue)
    to the drop target (red).

Tip 💡: Make the components the same size.

Spinner
Add the Spinner to actively engage each student. The spinner can randomly select a student or display random words and/or questions.

How does it work?
1. Add the spinner via +Component and then Spinner.

    Now you have a spinner with participant names.
2. Add questions/words to the spinner?
    Click on the spinner on the right.
    Choose Component settings.
3. Check the box Use terms instead of student names.
4. Add terms separated by commas.

Tip 💡: Place one spinner with the names of the participants and another spinner with questions/ words.

Poll debate

Use the poll to see if the students agree or disagree with a statement. Divide the class into teams "agree" and "disagree". Let the students come up with arguments for their team and start the debate!

How to create a poll?
  1. Open a lesson and click on + Add.
  2. Choose Poll and select create your own.
  3. Add a statement at the top.
  4. Choose T for text answer options.
  5. Create several answer options.

Guided Fantasy
The students listen, with their eyes closed, to a story read by you. The story is accompanied by music. Afterwards, the students create a visualization of what they have seen.


How to do this?
1. Find a (short) story.
2. Find a suitable sound here and download it as an MP3.
3. Open a slide and choose Audio at +Component.
4. Double-click on the audio and add the audio file.
5. Optionally, add a background image.

Tip 💡: Instead of you telling the story and the students drawing, let the students come up with a story that fits the music.

  1. Gebruik het verhaal over de kruistochten dat je kunt vinden als bijlage bij deze les.

Visible Thinking - See, think, wonder
See, Think, Wonder is an activity from Visible Thinking (Project Zero). The goal of Visible Thinking is to make students' thinking visible.

How do I create this?
  1. Find an image with sufficient visibility.
  2. 'I see...' (See). The student describes the picture without interpreting it.
  3. 'I think...' (Think). The student explains what is happening in the picture, interprets the image, and provides justification.
  4. 'I wonder...' (Wonder). The student raises remaining questions about the picture.

Trivial Pursuit 

To play Trivial Pursuit, your knowledge is tested. The spinner determines both the question and the color category. Each correctly answered question earns a 'pie piece.' The first player to collect all the pie pieces wins. Play in pairs.
How to create Trivial Pursuit?
1. Add a Spinner at + Component. Put questions in the
    spinner by double-clicking on the spinner.
2. Add a Hotspot at + Component.
3.Right-click on the spinner. Click on Settings.
   Choose Extra: Moveable during presentation.
4. Copy the hotspot five more times and change them to match the colors of the spinner in Settings.
5. Under + Components, you'll find Circle in the Symbols
section. Create six circles in the same colors as the
spinner.

Game of the Goose

With the game of "Game of the Goose," students work independently or in pairs or trios on the subject. As they progress through the game, the questions they receive become more difficult.

What do you need to create your own game?
1. A spinner with numbers -3, -2, -1, 1, 2, and 3.
2. Moveable hotspots as game pieces (pawns).
3. Fixed hotspots as designated places on the board.
4. Screenshots with questions/tasks that you link to
    the hotspots.

Gameplay
How does this game work?
  • Choose a pawn.
  • Spin the wheel and move the number of steps indicated on the wheel.
  • Follow the direction of the circles.
  • If you land on a green circle, choose one of the question marks and answer the question. Incorrect? Then skip a turn. Correct, the turn goes to the other player, but you may continue after that.
  • Lilac circle means waiting for a turn.
  • White circle, nothing happens.
  • The first player to reach one of the cups and answer correctly wins the game.
