Writing meaningful sentences
In V5 it is essential to expand your knowledge of vocabulary in order to understand the texts, short stories, poems and books that you are going to read.

One way of testing your vocabulary is to write so-called meaningful sentences.

Slide 6 - Slide

Writing meaningful sentences
‘A meaningful sentence is a sentence that provides context clues to help a reader understand the meaning of a word which may be unfamiliar.
It demonstrates that the writer has a clear understanding of the word used.’

Writing meaningful sentences
Such a sentence demonstrates that you understand a certain word by providing context.

But what does a meaningful sentence look like?

Slide 8 - Slide

unfamiliar
I was unfamiliar with that word, so I had to look it up in a dictionary first.

Not a definition
Meaningful sentences are NOT the same as definitions.

So ‘a puppy is a young dog’ is not considered a meaningful sentence, but a description or definition.

Slide 11 - Slide

Write a meaningful sentence for the word 'relentless'.
