Introduction

On Thursday 25/6, at 11.00 h. we will have an interview in English in which you are to show your oral skills. 

As we will be doing so by means of Google Meet, I'm sending  you the link for this online meeting

Instructions:

• read the 8 questions (orange slides) and take some time to think about how to answer them.   Remember: you can't use your book during the interview so you should prepare this task beforehand. 
• specific preparation is  NW + XY lessons 26+27 and HD B4 and B9 + basic knowledsge (f.e. verb tenses and other vocab)

• there is one question per slide and, although you're free to think of your own answer, you must use the cues between brackets.
• don't translate too much but just think of how you could put this into good English. 
• It will be highly appreciated (and add to your result) if you think of some own information too; so don't stick to the cues only!
• MIND: your performance is about natural speech! 
• You can practise as much as you want before the actual interview on Thursday, but make sure that you don't learn it by heart! 

                              speech assessment

Your performance will be judged on 'vwo' level, taking into account the following aspects: 

- natural speech/intonation

- pronunciation/ clarity of speech

- use of vocabulary

- use of grammar

- content >> adding information to the bare minimum of cues will be well appreciated!!

 

                                  8 Questions

Situation: you've witnessed a crime and you're at the police station to answer some questions.

 

1. police officer: Where were you at the time of the robbery? 

    you: [stond net de winkel af te sluiten en praatte nog wat met het beveiligingspersoneel toen ik verdachte activiteiten zag in onze winkel]

2. police officer:  Have you exeperienced any criminal behaviour in your shop before?

    you: [vroeger altijd beveiligingscamera's gehad/ schrikt misdadigers af. Nu kapot; nog niet aan reparatie toe gekomen; zou het eigenlijk  meteen moeten doen] 

3. police officer: Is there much criminality in the neighbourhood?

    you: [ noem 3 soorten misdaad die de laatste tijd in de winkel naast die van jullie plaats hebben gevonden; vaak jonge overtreders; maar eens advies vragen bij een beveiligingsadviseur]   

4.  police officer: There have been reported many crimes lately, but those youngsters usually get away with a warning. Could you give me a description of the robbers you saw? 

     you:  [kan alleen hun kleding volledig beschrijven; gezicht niet gezien; droegen donkere en wijde kleding; 1 droeg een kort jasje en de andere droeg een grote tas ; leek of daar al veel spullen in zaten]

5.  police officer:  We have been watching a youth gang for a while now; do you think these could be members? Were there any other people that looked suspicious to you at that moment?

      you: [kan ik echt niet zeggen; maar waarom onze winkel? ik zou denken dat het in een grote winkel makkelijker zou zijn om te stelen, toch? Verklaring?

6.  police officer:  I wouldn't know actually. What do you sell? 

 you:  [noem 3 producten en zeg dat je je realiseert dat die makkelijk mee te nemen zijn; liever vergeten omdat dit  het makkelijk maakt voor winkeldieven; vroeger verkochten jullie andere producten] 

7.  police officer: You'd better hire someone to patrol the shop.  Do you know anyone who could do so?  

      you: [ik ken een man die vroeger voor mijn vader werkte; hij zou ons kunnen helpen/is een detective.

 Als er te vaak gestolen wordt zou ik liever zelf iemand in het gezicht stompen, maar dat is tegen de wet. Wat doet u met eerste overtredingen?]

8. police officer:  They usually get away with a warning if it is about less serious criminal activities. Have you given a full statement now?

     you: [denk het wel; hoop dat jullie de overvallers te pakken krijgen; ik houd niet van oneerlijk gedrag en het maakt mijn werk minder leuk; ik leef liever in een wereld waarin eerlijkheid het langst duurt. We kunnen alle veroordeelden  naar Australie sturen, toch?]
