Things like the weather, current news (but not politics!), sports and entertainment, local sights and activities and hobbies are usually safe conversation starters.

Examples:

What kind of activities are you planning during your stay?/ Do you have any fun plans for today?
I noticed the Yankees logo on your T-shirt, are you a baseball fan (too)?
(How) Did you enjoy your meal at the restaurant last night?
Your kids are so well-behaved, you must be very proud of them.
And where are you from? (How) Are you getting used to the weather?
Have you been to see.... yet? It is fascinating/ very interesting/ spectacular/...
Did you hear about the earthquake in Japan? Isn't it just terrible?
