LISTENING
As you know, there is a difference between hearing and listening. Most of the time, there are sounds around you. Perhaps you can hear the sound of traffic nearby, a song on the radio or a conversation somewhere else in the room. Hearing happens unconsciously; you can't help but hear the sounds. Listening, on the other hand, requires attention. Think about the music you hear throughout the day. Most of the time, you only hear the songs without thinking about them. However, when you want to find out exactly what (part of) a song is about, you actually pay attention and listen.

There are many different listening situations, and in real life you usually know what to expect when you need to listen. For example, when you're at the railway station and there is an announcement over the loudspeaker, it is likely there will be information about the trains. When you turn on the news, you know there will be information about current events and when you watch an interview with a famous football player, you can expect he will talk about his life and about football.

As with reading, spoken texts can inform, persuade or entertain you. They can also have more than one purpose. The most important purpose determines what kind of text it is.

Which listening strategies can we link to reading strategies?

Slide 17 - Slide
