Fractions

What is a fraction?
Well, a fraction is a way of using numbers to tell how much of something is left or how much is missing.

Slide 8 - Slide

A fraction is made up of 2 parts

Slide 9 - Slide

We are going to start with the denominator.

When you hear denominator
think -down- because the denominator is down, the bottom number.

Slide 10 - Slide

We could use any shape to learn about fractions but we are going to use a circle.

Slide 11 - Slide

Now I am going to show you how to figure out fractions!

Ready?

How many pieces were in that pie?

Let me show you the picture again?

____________
A denominator is the bottom number on a fraction (remember, think "down"). The denominator tells how many possible pieces there are. Select how many pieces of pie there were and stick it below the black line.

Slide 15 - Drag question

OK, Let's Practice.
Remember, the denominator is the bottom number.
It tells how many possible pieces there are.

So... if we made a fraction for a pie, we'd need to know how many pieces of pie they cut. If we were doing pizza or cake, we'd need to know how many pieces of pizza or cake were cut.
That's how we find the denominator of a fraction.

Slide 16 - Slide

If we made a fraction about this pizza, what would the denominator be?
A
8
B
4
C
10
D

Slide 17 - Quiz

A lady made a yummy cherry pie. She cut and served five pieces. What's the denominator for the fraction of that pie?
A
0
B
4
C
5
D

Slide 18 - Quiz

Is the denominator the top or bottom number on a fraction?
A
Top
B
C
D
Bottom

Slide 19 - Quiz

Denominator for this pie is?
A
8
B
6
C
3
D

Slide 20 - Quiz

What is the other number?
Denominators go down. They are the bottom number.

What's the top number?
It's called the numerator.

The numerator tells how many pieces are left or how many are missing.

Slide 21 - Slide

Practice #1
To find the numerator, all you have to do is count the pieces. Sometimes we count pieces that are missing and sometimes we count the pieces remaining.

We're going to start with the pieces missing.
This answers the question, "What fraction is missing?"

Slide 22 - Slide

How many pieces are missing from each plate of food?

Slide 23 - Drag question

Now those same numbers you counted go on top of the fraction line- these are the numerators!

Practice #2
Let's use those same pictures a different way!

This time I want you to count the pieces that are left!

Ready?

This will answer the question, "What fraction is remaining?"

Slide 25 - Slide

How many pieces are still on each plate of food?

Slide 26 - Drag question

Just like earlier, those numbers become the numerators, the top number in a fraction.

Slide 27 - Drag question

Let's Put It All Together!
You now know how to find a numerator and the denominator, the two parts of a fraction.

Let's find both!

It's easy.

Slide 28 - Slide

Where does the numerator go in a fraction?

Slide 29 - Open question

Where does the denominator go?

Slide 30 - Open question

Building fractions
You're going to see the same pictures from earlier.

Count for the denominator and fill it in too.
Then count the numerator and fill it in.

You've got this!

Slide 31 - Slide

Find the denominator- how many pieces were cut?
Find the numerator- how many pieces are left.
