I learnt some new words from the article I've read. 

I know different types of reading and can apply them to an article. 

I can form an opinion on a topic mentioned in an article and can use arguments from the text to explain.

What should you be able to do at the end of this year in terms of reading comprehension?

• Understand the structure (verbanden) and central idea (hoofdgedachte) of a text.
  
• Know the meaning and function of linking words.
• Recognise arguments for and against, positive and negative.
• Recognise and understand the opinions of experts.
• Recognise examples and their function in the text.

This year we will work on your personal growth by:

• Using all kinds of English sources about various topics to expand your world.
• Teaching you how to use reliable sources to substantiate your ideas and opinions.
• Getting you out of the "comfortable" zone and into the learning zone.
• Helping you achieve goals you set for yourself in terms of writing, speaking, listening and reading.
• Showing you how to learn from your (English) mistakes and how do deal with disappointment or  'failure'. 
• Discussing and practicing the tools you can use to learn/improve something.
• Challenging you to stay curious!

What words come up when you think about reading?

What topics do you enjoy reading/hearing about? 

What is your personal goal when it comes to reading? Discuss with your neighbour. I will ask 2 people to share their answer.

 

Some examples:

• I would like to improve my focus while reading.
• I would like to improve my reading skill enough to pass my exams. 
• I would like to read more.
• I would like to improve my vocab so it is easier to understand a text.
• I would like to improve my use of the reading strategies so it is easier to find the information I need. 
• I would like to read about other topics than topics I am used to and expand my general knowledge. 
• I would like to enjoy reading more than I do now.

Why start with reading practice when the (reading) exam is in May?

• You get a good idea of what level you are at and what needs to happen to achieve your personal goal. 
• You learn how to recognize and use reliable sources.
• Improving your reading skill will be useful for when we read a 3rd novel in P2. 
• You expand your vocab (which you can use in speaking/listening/writing.
• You learn about new topical issues and are able to form opinions and ideas.  

What will we use in class: 

• News articles
• Short stories

• Discussion topics 
• Quizlet  (SLL woordenlijst / Words in Progress)

What to bring each lesson:

o Pen and paper / notebook
o Tablet or laptop charged (for consulting online sources and the ELO etc..) + earphones
o Dictionary (preferably monolingual English-English)
