There are some adjectives which can be used in both forms

clever   = more clever/ cleverer  + the cleverest/the most clever
friendly=more friendly/friendlier + the friendliest/the most friendly
simple   = simpler/more simple + the simplest/the most simple

pleasant, narrow, common, polite, likely, stupid, cruel

 3 types of comparison

comparative (2 things) =  She is smarter than me.
                                           She is more intelligent than me.

superlative (3 or more) = She is the smartest student of this class.   
                                           She is the most intelligent student of this class.

equal (the same)           =  She is as smart as me.
                                           She is as intelligent as me.
