1. D - Day Normandy
D-Day - 6 June 1944 - was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The statistics of D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, are staggering. The Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings marked the start of a long and costly campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately convinced the German high command that defeat was inevitable.

2. Operation Market Garden
Operation Market Garden was an Allied military operation fought in the Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944. Its objective was to create a 103 km salient into German territory with a bridgehead over the River Rhine, creating an Allied invasion route into northern Germany. This was to be achieved by two sub-operations: Seizing nine bridges with airborne forces (Market) followed by land forces following over the bridges (Garden). The operation succeeded in liberating the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen along with many towns, but it failed to secure a bridgehead over the Rhine.

3. The Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was a major air campaign fought largely over southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940. After the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk and the Fall of France, Germany planned to gain air superiority in preparation for an invasion of Great Britain. The pilots of RAF Fighter Command, flying iconic aircraft including the Hurricane and Spitfire, were supported by a vast network of ground crew during the battle. Ultimately, the Luftwaffe was defeated by Fighter Command, forcing Adolf Hitler to abandon his invasion plans.

4. Kristallnacht
On November 9 to November 10, 1938, in an incident known as “Kristallnacht”, Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed close to 100 Jews. In the aftermath of Kristallnacht, also called the “Night of Broken Glass,” some 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.

5. Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes region of Belgium was Adolf Hitler’s last major offensive in World War II against the Western Front. Hitler’s aim was to split the Allies in their drive toward Germany. The German troops’ failure to divide the allied forces with the Ardennes offensive paved the way to victory.
Lasting six brutal weeks, from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, the assault took place during frigid weather conditions, across 85 miles of the densely wooded Ardennes Forest.

6. Sonderkommando's in Sobibor
Sobibor was an extermination camp built. It was located in the forest near the village of Sobibór.
As an extermination camp rather than a concentration camp, Sobibor existed for the sole purpose of murdering Jews. The vast majority of prisoners were gassed within hours of arrival.
Those not killed immediately were forced to assist in the operation of the camp, and few survived more than a few months.

7. Operation Compass
Operation Compass was the first major Allied military operation of the Western Desert Campaign. British and Commonwealth forces attacked Italian forces in western Egypt and eastern Libya in December 1940 to February 1941. The operation was a complete success.
Allied forces advanced from inside Egypt to central Libya suffering very few casualties and captured 115,000 Italian prisoners. The Italians lost hundreds of tanks and over a thousand each of artillery pieces and aircraft.

8. Atomic bombing of Hiroshima
On August 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion immediately killed an estimated 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure.
Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of “a new and most cruel bomb.”

9. Attack on Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military launched a surprise attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. With the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. could no longer avoid an active fight. On December 8, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asked Congress for and received a declaration of war against Japan. On December 11, Germany and Italy, allied with Japan, declared war on the U.S. The United States had entered World War II.

10. Sinking the Bismarck Battleship
Bismarck was a battleship built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany. In its eight-month career, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, lasting 8 days in May 1941. The ship, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain.
