Will:

 Je gebruikt will wanneer je net besloten hebt om iets te doen. Er zijn verschillende situaties wanneer je will gebruikt. Als je iemand bijvoorbeeld belooft om iets te doen of als je iemand vraagt om iets te doen, dan gebruik je vaak will. Een voorbeeld hiervan is: I will return your bike on Friday (Ik breng je fiets vrijdag terug.). Als iemand iets niet wil doen, dan gebruik je will not of won’t. Je gebruikt will dus als je een nieuwe beslissing wil aankondigen, terwijl je met to be going to de beslissing al eerder hebt gemaakt.

 

Examples:

I think it will rain tomorrow. (prediction)

I will help you with your homework. (offer)

She will visit her grandparents over the weekend. (future action)

To be going to:

Deze gebruik je als je besloten hebt om iets te doen en je bedoeling is om de taak ook echt uit te voeren. Het gaat hierbij niet om afspraken, zoals de present continuous, maar om beslissingen. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld zeggen: I don’t feel well, I’m not going to the party tonight (Ik voel me niet lekker, ik ga niet naar het feestje vanavond.)

Examples:

They are going to travel to Europe next summer. (planned action)

He looks tired; he is going to fall asleep soon. (expectation based on evidence)

We are going to have a meeting later. (intention)

Shall:

 

Het werkwoord "shall" wordt gebruikt om een suggestie of een advies te geven. "Shall" wordt vaak op een formele manier gebruikt. 

 Het werkwoord "shall" kan alleen worden gebruikt met de persoonlijke voornaamwoorden "I" en "We" wanneer een een suggestie wordt gegeven.

Examples:

Shall we go for a walk? (suggestion)

I shall be there at 3 PM. (future action)

You shall not pass without permission. (obligation, formal)

Bij deze opdracht krijg je een reeks zinnen en moet je de juiste vorm van de toekomende tijd kiezen (will, going to, or shall). Daarnaast licht je je keuze telkens kort toe. Uit de uitleg moet blijken dat je de verschillende toepassingen van deze future tenses begrijpt.
