who -> verwijst naar personen

which -> verwijst naar dieren & dingen
This is the pen which I got for my birthday.

that -> gebruik je in plaats van who/which. 
This is the pen that I got for my birthday.
Dit mag ALLEEN als de bijzin niet tussen twee komma's staat. 

De bijzin tussen twee komma's geeft extra informatie. 
His father, who is over sixty, is going to get married soon.
Je kunt deze soort bijzinnen herkennen aan het volgende: zonder deze informatie blijft het nog steeds een goede Engelse zin:              His father is going to get married soon.

whose -> personen, dieren, dingen. Aangeven van wie/wat iets is (bezit).
The student whose book was damaged.
That is the house whose roof was blown off.

whom -> personen, gebruik alleen na een voorzetsel. 
The woman  to whom Barry is talking is a teacher.

Let op: 
The woman who/that Barry is talking to, is a teacher.

Wanneer laat je who/which/that weg?
Als het woord NIET terug slaat op het onderwerp.
Zonder who/which/that blijft het een goede Engelse zin. 

This is the girl .....X..... I saw yesterday. 
I is het onderwerp van de zin, NIET the girl.
The car .....X..... she bought in 2019 is red.
she is het onderwerp van de zin, NIET the car.
