The age of rock
1. Relative age: compared to something else, it is older or younger. For example, fossils are used for this.

2. Absolute age: you can say exactly how old something is. Absolute age is demonstrated by using, for example, radioactivity or carbon analysis techniques.

Different types of rock
Igneous rock
• Basalt > heavy, thin, ocean floor
• Granite > light, thick, continent

Organic sedimentary rock = formed from remains of plants or animals
• Limestone > skeletons, seabed
• Lignite > plant remains, peat

Metamorphic rock = formed under high pressure and high temperature from igneous or sedimentary rock
• Marble (from limestone)
