Is er een naam bekend aan wie je schrijft? Dan gebruik je de volgende opties:
  • Dear mr [achternaam]
  • Dear ms [achternaam] = ongetrouwde vrouw
  • Dear mrs [achternaam] = getrouwde vrouw
  • Dear ms [achternaam] = geen idee of de vrouw getrouwd is
Schrijf:
  • Wie je bent
  • De hoofdreden waarom je schrijft
Geef:
  • extra informatie die nodig is voor de ontvanger (=meer informatie die de ontvanger moet gebruiken in zijn/haar antwoord)
Benoem:
  • opnieuw waarom je schrijft (kort samengevat)
  • geef aan dat je snel op een reactie terug hoopt.

Writing exercise Disney hotel – Making a request
During the holidays you are going to Disney for three days. You’ve booked a room for two nights at Vienna House Dream Castle Hotel via Booking.com for 107 euros a night. At the last moment you would like to add an extra night so that you don’t have to drive home late in the evening. On Booking.com the rates have changed and it is now 155 euros a night. This is too expensive! You are going to write an email to the hotel to see if you can book the extra night for the previous rate.

Make sure to include the following:
  • Use the regular layout for an email
  • Start with an opening sentence
  • Explain the situation and add your personal information
  • State your request
  • The date you’ve already booked (5th until the 7th) and the date you would like to add
  • Use a proper concluding sentence
  • The email needs to be at least 100 words
