Texas is well-known for its massive size. As the second-largest state in the US in both land mass and population, the state of Texas encompasses over 268,597 square miles. To put that into perspective, Texas is twice as big as Japan or Germany and 10% bigger than France. If Texas were a country, it would rank 40th largest in land size.

  •  The capital -  Austin.
  • Texas is also known as the Lone Star State. 
  • It  became an independent republic after it declared its independence from Mexico in  1836 .
  • In 1846  it became part of the United States. 
  • More wool comes from Texas than any other state in the US.

  • John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine, was charged with the assassination. 
  • However, Oswald was killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby just two days later, before he could stand trial.
