Imperialism

• How did imperialism lead to the Great War?
• The search for a growing empire outside of Europe caused tension between the European countries.

• How did the development of nation states lead to the Great War?
• The unification of Germany caused tension between Germany, France and Russia.
• The different nations in Austria Hungary want to be independent.
• Nationalism made countries eager to fight others.

Militarism

• The idea that a government should have a strong army and that the army deserves respect.

Arms race

• Competition between the nations to build and have the most (and best) weapons.
• The arms race started as a reaction to militarism in the European countries.

Alliances

• Rivalry and fear pushed many European countries into forming alliances with other countries.
